It’s been almost a year since Literacy in the Disciplines 6-12 lost a dear colleague and friend to a tragic accident. Dr. Heather Hall’s absence has been felt every time the Board gathers to plan and implement opportunities to further its disciplinary literacy mission.

But let’s look forward!  Today is a day to celebrate Heather’s legacy by announcing the first recipient of the Dr. Heather Hall Inclusive Literacy Award for recognizing literacy as both an academic skill and a human experience, enriched through the arts, global perspectives, and inclusivity – Treva Thomas Hammond!

Treva is a Literacy Specialist from Fort Mill, South Carolina.  She has over thirty years as a middle school educator. Her specialty is English Language Arts. Upon receiving the award, Treva said, “Literacy connects us. It transcends time, boundaries, and cultural differences as our stories intertwine and we find common ground. Dr. Hall joyfully embodied these connections in her work with students and in her travels. As the first recipient, I accept with deepest honor and gratitude the award created in memory of her work, the Dr. Heather Hall Inclusive Literacy Award. Her story has become part of mine and her legacy will continue.” 

Celebrating with us were Treva’s principal Trina McFadden and Superintendent Grey Young. Mr. Young was Treva’s student in middle school ELA.

And so, as we look forward in this new school year, we consider ourselves fortunate to have shared in Heather’s life and are excited to see her legacy touch more students and colleagues through Treva’s commitment to Inclusive Literacy.
